A Christmas Story

''And they lived happily every after,'' I smiled as I closed the book to my daughter, Lily's favorite fairy tale: Cinderella. Sometimes i felt that was staring right into the eyes of a living Cinderella.

She had asked me, ''Mommy, I have only one wish for Christmas.'' I raised a brow, because it was very rare that she would ask for ONE thing only. Well, it was actually her first time. I looked into her big brown eyes.

''And what would THAT be...?''

''A puppy...'' She giggled nervously, slightly blushing. I found it cute that she thought asking for a puppy was amusing.

''I'll ask Santa. We'll have to check in with him first.'' I tucked her in, kissing her gently on her forehead.

''Goodnight, mommy.'' She closed her eyes. I switched the lights off, exiting the room.

A puppy...I didn't want to see her little heart broken, but I don't know if it was affordable either.

The next day I drove over to the grocery store, Cinderella in the backseat reading her own story, playing with her barbies. I saw a woman walking two dogs in the rain. I decided to stop and help.

I stepped out of the car, walking toward her.

''What brings you here to walk your dogs out in the cold rain like this?'' I asked her.

''I'm thinking about giving this puppy away.'' She told me, holding a a brown fury puppy in her hands. ''It's mother is right here, and I've been trying to get rid of her puppies all day. She had more than 20!''

I gasped, looking back at the window shield. I saw Lily, playing with her barbies.

''My daughter Lily, well, shes been wishing for a puppy. It's kinds of a miracle you came by. It's the only thing she wants and look at the poor girl--I could repay you greatly.'' I smiled.

''No, no, don't repay me. I just want to get rid of the playful little rascals!'' We both laughed.

''How about I stop by at your house for Christmas Eve to retrieve it, only until Christmas.''

''Sure thing!'' She smiled, walking the dogs back along.

I got back into the car, smiling. I was proud of myself.

By Christmas morning, I had the puppy all taken care of--Lily was happier than anything, petting it. They loved each other instantly--she named her Ella, after Cinderella. I remember asking her ''Why not just ''Cinderella''?

And she replied, ''Because I'm YOUR Cinderella, mommy.'' I instantly smiled, hugging her tightly, never wanting to let her go. Yes, yes indeed, She was my Cinderella, and even better, i have an Ella now. :)
