The number of square units that cover the surface of a figure is called the Area.  A square unit has sides that are each one unit long.

 

The example below is 1 square inch or 1 SQinch.gif (892 bytes).

In the figure below, there are 6 square units.  You would write 6 square inches or 6 SQinch.gif (892 bytes).
