# 24-1 Renaming Fractions & Mixed Numbers

You can change an improper fraction into a mixed numeral by dividing the denominator into the numerator as shown below.

 17 means 17 -:- 3 3
 17 -:- 3 = 5 remainder 2 or 5 2 3

You can change a mixed number into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding the numerator as shown below.

 5 2 = (3x5) + 2 = 17 3 3 3

Change the improper fraction to a mixed number.

 19 means 19 -:- 4
 19 -:- 4 = remainder 3 or 4 3 4

 18 means -:- 5 5
 18 -:- 5 = remainder 3 or 3 5

 11 means -:- 2
 -:- 2 = remainder 1 or 1 2

 17 means -:- 3
 17 -:- 3 = remainder or 2 3

 28 means -:- 9
 -:- = remainder or 1 9

Change the mixed number to an improper fraction.

 4 2 = (3x) + 2 = 3 3 3

 2 1 = (4x) + = 4 4

 5 3 = (5x) + 3 = 5

 2 1 = (x) + = 2 2 2

 7 3 = (x) + = 8
