Constellations

Constellations are groups of stars you see in the night sky.  Long ago, people looked into the sky and saw shapes made by the stars.  They gave these shapes names like Draco (the Dragon), Leo (the lion), and Taurus (the bull).

There are eighty-eight constellations.  One of the easiest to find is the Big Dipper.  It is only part of a constellation.  If forms the back and tail of a constellation called Ursa Major, the Great Bear.  If you can find the Big Dipper you can also find the Little Dipper.  The bright star, which is the first star in the handle of the Little Dipper is the North Star.

The North Star is so close to true north that people have used it at night to guide their way.
