3-36 Spelling Tip

The u sound.
The sign for the u sound is /wpe1.gif (866 bytes)/.
The u sound is in pull and full.
The u sound is spelled oo in wood and stood.

 

Words Definitions
1. hum 1. make a steady sound like that of a bee:   The sewing machine hums when it is running.  2.  a sound that doesn't stop:  We listened to the hum of bees in the field.  3.  sing with closed lips, not sounding words:  Can you hum a tune?
2. hummingbird a tiny, brightly colored bird.  Its wings move so rapidly they make a humming sound.
3. puzzle 1.  a hard problem.  2.  a problem or task to be done for fun:  He was working a puzzle.  3.  be unable to understand something:  How the mouse got in puzzled us.
4. tub 1.  a large bowl for washing clothes.   2.  a bath tub.
5. hurrah a shout of joy.
6. tug 1. pull hard.  2.  a hard pull: She gave a tug on the rope.
7. mustard 1.  a plant whose seeds have a sharp, hot taste.  2.  a powder or paste made from these seeds.  Mustard is often spread on hot dogs.
8. sunrise the coming up of the sun; the time when the sun appears in the morning.
9. sunset the going down of the sun; the time when the sun is last seen in the evening.
10. tummy stomach:  The baby crawled along on its tummy.
