4-2 Spelling Tip

Silent e.
You know the long vowel sound is many times spelled vowel + consonant + silent e.  
The silent e is the the vowel + consonant + silent e in close, huge, and smile.

 

Words Definitions
1. giggle 1.  laugh in a silly way:  The children giggled in the corner.  2.  a silly laugh:  We heard a loud giggle from the back of the room.
2. compute count or figure up:  We computed the number of miles we had traveled.
3. slope 1.  slant:  The land slopes toward the road.   2.  any surface that slants:  We couldn't see the top of that long slope.
4. cube a block with six square faces, or sides, all of equal size.
5. spike 1.  a large, strong nail.  2.  a pointed piece of metal: some athletes have spikes on their shoes to keep them from slipping.
6. chose take one instead of any other from a group:  He chose his favorite color.
7. ignore pay no attention to; disregard.
8. glare 1. a strong, bright light that hurts the eyes.  2. shine strongly enough to hurt the eyes.  3.  look at someone angrily.
9. pane a sheet of glass in a window:  The hail broke several window panes.
10. parade a march for some special event:  Clowns were in the circus parade.
