5-35 Spelling Tip

Suffixes -ance and -ence
Suffixes are endings to words.
The suffix -ance is added to import - importance.
The suffix -ence is added to independ - independence.

 

Words Definitions
1. clearance 1.  act of clearing.  2.  a clear space; distance between things that pass by each other without touching.  3. a certifying that a person considered for a position of trust is reliable.  4. sale of goods at reduced prices.
2. independence condition of being independent; freedom from the control, influence, support, or help of others:  The American colonies won independence from England.
3. importance a being important; consequence; value; significance: Anybody can see the importance of good health.
4. indifference 1.  lack of interest or attention; not caring:  The child's indifference to food worried its parents.  2.  lack of importance.
5. obedience an obeying; doing what one is told to do; submission to authority or law.
6. inconvenience 1.  lack of convenience or ease; trouble; bother.   2.  something inconvenient; cause of trouble, difficulty, or bother.  3. cause trouble, difficulty, or bother to.
7. assistance an assisting; aid; help:  I need your assistance.
8. radiance vivid brightness:  the radiance of the sun, the radiance of a smile.
9. evidence 1.  anything that shows what is true and what is not; facts; proof:  The evidence showed that he had not been near the place.  2. facts established and accepted in a court of law.  3.  show clearly.
10. performance 1.  carrying out; doing; performing:  in the performance of one's regular duties, the efficient performance of an automobile.
